- demonstrate how important employability qualities are in the workplace
- enable students to assess their personal performance against many facets of employability skills
- provide opportunities for students to discuss and develop plans for personal improvement (develop skills and behaviours, change attitudes)
- enable students to test out ideas for improvement and evaluate the changes made
- relate students learning to their own circumstances
- identify personal priorities for improvement
- demonstrate the how these improvements enhance performance and therefore students’ employability.
"results from the questionnaire indicated that specific employability skills were improved in 88% of cases"
Each of the activities involves students in;
- group work to solve practical problems
- guided individual thought to evaluate their own performance
- group review to develop understanding and identify priorities for personal change
- testing and evaluating ideas for improvement to develop the confidence and commitment to apply their learning
How is the learning managed?
- The facilitator selects the appropriate activity. (Each activity has it’s own discussion topics and target learning opportunities.)
- Each activity begins with an engaging but non-technical task, usually based on large scale plastic components
- Tasks are short, typically 10 – 30 minutes
- After the task individuals evaluate their performance by completing a worksheet which guides their thinking through the targeted learning opportunities
- Students discuss their responses to develop their understanding The facilitator runs a increase students’ understanding of how well they as individuals use these qualities
- The facilitator monitors students, guiding them through the learning and ensuring that they make links which are both personal and relevant to their own circumstances.
- The activities can be used in isolation or the facilitator may decide to run two or three activities back to back to develop, broaden and embed the learning.
